Slovenia Unveiled Across Gundula's Great Eurasian Roam šŗļøšš²20th August 2026
Finally, I made my way into the very first uncharted territory of this trip! Yet, entering Slovenia started off with a total lack of fanfareājust a tiny LandesgrenzeĀ sign bidding farewell to Austria. The motorway rolled on, immaculate and pristine, flanked by mountains that remained breathtakingly majestic šļøāØ

Then came my first real driving scare of the voyage. The skies suddenly ripped open, unleashing a torrential downpour as if heaven itself had pulled a plug. Ā I did not take a photograph or video as proof of the dire situation... Phew, somehow, noble Ludwig VAN and I weathered the cloudburst, even if we emerged a little shaken! ššØš§ļø
Not much later, the navi played games with me, hurling me off the motorway onto winding village backroads. The jarringly uneven patchwork repairs gave me an eerie flash of driving through East London, and when I bounced over a vicious speed bump in the very first village, I felt as though I'd been unceremoniously catapulted straight back to the East End.
The second driving scare was literally just around the corner, and my driving credentials were put to the test all over again: hair-raising mountain roads, first scaling dizzying heights and then plunging back down around sharp 180-degree bends š. I hadĀ promised Ludwig VAN we would avoid these, but whatās a traveller to do? Creeping downwards at a snail's pace whilst a convoy of impatient cars stacked up behind me, I seriously contemplated taping an apology sign to my rear:
āIām horrible at driving mountain hairpin bends - please accept an ice cream on me!āĀ š¦š
...complete with a QR code for a comforting scoop of gelato!
Thankfully, the rest of the route smoothed out into sheer visual poetry, letting me soak up gorgeous alpine villages touched with that unmistakable, warming hint of Balkan soul šæš”

Slovenians do not allow wild camping, so for my peace of mind I secured a pitch at a campsite in Bohinj Bistrica as my base to explore all the dazzling treasures the majestic Julian Alps have to offer āŗāØ
