Climbing Ancient Ruins and Hunting for Live Music in Kotor – Gundula's Great Eurasian Roam 🏰🎶

For today, I planned to climb up to the ancient fortress 🏰, which sits dramatically high on the mountain ⛰️. From below, it looks like a wild piece of architecture, with heavy stone walls clinging to the steep slope all the way up to the summit.

Whilst the first few stages were well-paved and therefore frequented by far too many tourists, the crowds thinned out as the path grew steeper and more rugged. With every new section and viewpoint 🌅, the scenery became even more stunning. Ascending toward the fortress, I could not help but think of the poor builders – likely slave labourers – who built those massive walls and stone pathways.

In the end, I could not quite reach the fortress itself. The track was not signposted, grew increasingly erratic, and at one point just dead-ended in front of a rock wall 🧱. Perhaps the true path was hidden beneath overgrown trees 🌳; I even risked one tricky climb through a ravine hoping it would pick up on the other side, only to find nothing, leaving me with an even spicier climb back! 🧗‍♀️😅

Back in town later, I was on my usual hunt for live music 🎻. All I found was a hurdy-gurdy player (who looked remarkably Scottish 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿) playing general medieval-sounding tunes. The local venue that promised daily traditional music had nothing on – very disappointing. Still, the beauty and atmosphere of the town outside peak tourist hours, alongside the magnificent sea 🌊, made it more than worth the visit. ✨
