Review of EP 'With Apfelstrudel & Turkish Coffee'

"Eines vorab: Mein musikalischer Schwerpunkt liegt in der Rockmusik, mit all ihren vielen Facetten und Ausdrucksformen. Das heißt, ich höre auch Blues, Pop und Folk. Entscheidend dabei ist immer, dass die Musik mein Herz und meine Seele berührt. Und da sind wir auch schon bei der EP "With Apfelstrudel and Turkish Coffee". Diese musikalische Reise entlang der Donau von "The Magic Violin String Trio" berührt mein Herz und meine Seele und ist für Musikliebhaber jeglicher Coleure hörenswert.
Die Songs sind ohne technische Tricks aufgenommen. Man hat das Gefühl, die Band spiele direkt neben einem. Ich war vom ersten Ton an begeistert. Der Grund ist schlicht und einfach die Ehrlichkeit hinter diesen Liedern, hinter diesen Interpretationen. Da ist jeder Ton geerdet und dient nicht der Selbstdarstellung, sondern rein der Musik.
Bandleaderin Gundula Gruen an Violine und Gesang, Gitarrist Jeremy Halliwell und Fraser Parry am Cello haben die Musik der Kulturen entlang der Donau verinnerlicht und verstehen es glänzend, zusammen ein positives Lebensgefühl zu vermitteln. Nicht nur der Opener "Dunăreanca" und "Káde Shukár" versprühen die pure Lebenslust. Auch der Harmoniegesang der drei Musiker überzeugt immer wieder und verleitet zum Mitsingen (Anspieltipp: „Oj j Ružice Rumena: Oh ruddy little red rose"). Allerdings sind Sprachkenntnisse nötig, denn das Trio singt in den jeweiligen Landessprachen bzw. Dialekten.
Nachdenklich und ergreifend wird es beim "Hungarian Funeral March". Und als letztes Lied zeigt das Instrumental "Nihaven Sigan" noch einmal die musikalische Klasse von "The Magic Violin String Trio". Das Herzblut, das das Trio in seine Musik steckt, ist auch im Booklet sichtbar. Mit viel Hingabe gestaltet, bietet es jede Menge Informationen."

The songs are recorded without technical tricks. You get the feeling the band is playing right beside you. I was hooked from the very first note. The reason is simply the honesty behind these songs, behind these interpretations. Every note is grounded and serves not self-display, but purely the music.
Bandleader Gundula Gruen on violin and vocals, guitarist Jeremy Halliwell and Fraser Parry on cello have internalised the music of the cultures along the Danube and brilliantly know how to convey a positive zest for life together. Not only the opener "Dunăreanca" and "Káde Shukár" radiate pure joie de vivre. The three musicians' close harmony singing also convinces time and again and tempts you to sing along (recommended track: "Oj j Ružice Rumena: Oh ruddy little red rose"). However, language skills are required, as the trio sings in the respective national languages or dialects.
Things become thoughtful and moving with the "Hungarian Funeral March". And as the final track, the instrumental "Nihaven Sigan" once more demonstrates the musical class of The Magic Violin String Trio.
