About the Artists
The Magic Violin String Trio
The Magic Violin String Trio blossomed in 2020 from the core string players of Gundula’s acclaimed 5-piece Balkan ensemble, Tatcho Drom. Featuring Gundula Stojanova Gruen (violin & lead vocals), Fraser Parry (cello & backing vocals), and Jeremy Halliwell (guitar), the trio brings together virtuosic string arrangements, rich vocal harmonies, and deep ethnographic storytelling. Together, they reimagine traditional melodies and traditional lore from across the Balkans and Danube trade routes with acoustic warmth, vitality, and intimacy.
Gundula Stojanova Gruen
Gundula is a virtuoso violinist, singer, author, and ethnomusicologist known as the "Magic Violin" for her infectious stage energy and expressive performances. Having spent decades travelling throughout Central and Eastern Europe to research, archive, and learn traditional folk tunes directly from Gypsy masters and village musicians, her work bridges authentic oral history with fresh, contemporary string craftsmanship.
